~ adj precautionary measures/steps etc things that you do in order to prevent something dangerous or unpleasant from happening (The ward will be closed for a week as a precautionary measure.) precede ~ v formal 1 to happen or exist before something or someone or to come before something else in a series (The numbers on the license plate are preceded by a letter. | He was a much stronger leader than the man who preceded him. (=was leader before him)) 2 to go somewhere before someone else (John preceded his guests into the lounge.) 3 to say or write something as an introduction to a speech, book etc (The author preceded his speech with a few words of welcome.)
